ArchbishopKeith O'Brien to become a Cardinal.  

Reacting to the announcement made today that the Pope will make him a Cardinal at a consistory in Rome on 21 October 2003, Archbishop Keith O Brien commented:  
It is with deep gratitude that I accept this honour on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Scotland. As President of the Bishops Conference of Scotland I am proud of the fact that our small nation continues to be recognised and acknowledged by the Church.  

He added:  
On my ordination as Archbishop of St. Andrew s and Edinburgh eighteen years ago I chose as my motto Serve the Lord with Gladness , I have tried since then to live out that theme in my own Diocese. I hope I will be able to continue to serve the people of this Archdiocese and the whole Catholic community of Scotland for many years to come.

Archbishop O'Brien will be fulfilling a series of previously arranged Diocesan engagements today (Sunday 28 September) in West Stirlingshire. He will be available for photographs and interviews at a press conference, which will be held at St. Patrick's, Buchlyvie, Stirlingshire at 1.30pm.  

Archbishop O'Brien will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 12.45pm on Monday 29 September at St. Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh followed by a photocall at the Cathedral at 1.30pm.  

Archbishop O'Brien (65) was ordained a priest in 1965 and became Archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew's and Edinburgh in 1985, he is President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland.
