Speaking during a visit to Stirling today, Archbishop Keith O'Brien said: "I would like to be among the first to congratulate Stirling on being awarded city status and I am delighted to be in Stirling on the day this historic announcement was made."  

He added: "As is well known, Stirling has played and continues to play a pivotal role in Scotland's history and the distinguished recognition it has achieved  
today, is a mark, not just of past greatness but of present and future success.  

Archbishop O'Brien has passed on a message of congratulations to Lord Provost Tom Brookes and was speaking during a pastoral visit to St. Mary's parish, Stirling.
