Cardinal comments on London blasts

Reacting to the news of explosions in central London today, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland said:

"On behalf of my brother Bishops and myself I send deepest sympathies to all those affected by these appalling terrorist attacks together with the promise of our thoughts and prayers at this traumatic time.

Cardinal O'Brien added;

"Like everyone else I am deeply shocked at the scenes of violence, panic and confusion unfolding before our eyes today. I have written to The Prime Minister, Tony Blair and the President of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor assuring them of the support and sympathy of the Catholic community in Scotland.

I write on behalf of the Catholic Community in Scotland to assure you of our prayers and support in every way.

We pray for those who have died in today s cowardly, apparently terrorist attack. And we unite in our thoughts for those who have suffered that they and all involved in these events may realise that the innocent have our every support, while we give that same support to those who represent law and order in our community.

Dear Cardinal Cormac

Less than a week ago, you joined with me in that moving, peaceful demonstration, Make Poverty History, prior to the present G8 Leaders meeting in Scotland.

Now your people in London are subject to a cowardly, apparently terrorist attack.

My prayers and my sympathy are with you and your people, especially those who are suffering in any way. Be assured of the ongoing support of my people and all people of goodwill at this present time and in the days which lie ahead.

With my prayers and ongoing support.

Yours sincerely in Christ

Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh
