CARDINAL O'BRIEN WELCOMES AFRICAN AND ASIAN BISHOPS TO SCOTLAND  

A delegation of African and Asian Bishops are making a special visit to Scotland this week, to urge Scots to act to make poverty history.  

Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi, India, Archbishop Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel C.M., Archbishop of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia  
And Archbishop Medardo Joseph Mazombwe, Archbishop of Lusaka, Zambia  
will arrive in Edinburgh on Friday 27 May with Cardinal Keith O'Brien (the delegation having travelled from London where they met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown on Thursday 26 May, urging the Government to act to honour their commitment to halve poverty by 2015 and also to make trade fair; cancel debt and increase aid.).  

They will travel to St Patrick s church,5 South Gray Close, Edinburgh for Mass at 6pm followed by a meet-and-greet with parishioners at St Mary s Cathedral (completed by 7.30pm at the latest). At 7.40pm there will be a group photograph on Princes Street (you are invited to send a photographer/camera crew to this photo call)  

On Saturday 28th May, Archbishop Conti will chair an open meeting with the Bishops in Eyre Hall, Glasgow Archdiocesan Offices, 196 Clyde Street Glasgow at 10.30am.  

The Bishops are available for interview on Saturday morning from 9.30am  
till 10.30am at the Eyre Hall in Glasgow. To arrange an interview please

Leading Scottish aid agency, SCIAF, is urging everyone who is passionate  
about justice to take the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts about  
poverty in the developing world from Cardinal Toppo from India and  
Archbishops Souraphiel (Ethiopia), Onaiyekan (Nigeria) and Mazombwe  
(Zambia).  

The events are part of a busy schedule which involves the Bishops  
meeting key political leaders across Europe in the run up to the summit  
of the G8 (the eight most powerful countries in the world) at Gleneagles  
in July.  

Before leaving Scotland, the delegation will travel to Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon to attend the Scottish Cup Final.  

Commenting on the visit, Cardinal O'Brien said;  
"It is a sign of the significant role played by Scotland's Catholic aid agency SCIAF in the Make Poverty History campaign and in European aid networks that such a high level delegation are visiting both Edinburgh and Glasgow."  

He added, ;  
"I am delighted to welcome our honoured African and Indian guests and can assure them of a warm welcome in Scotland and a sympathetic hearing for their calls for fair trade and debt cancellation."
