Reacting to his appointment to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, Cardinal Keith O'Brien said today:

"I am delighted to be appointed to both these Pontifical Councils and I look forward to contributing to their work in future.

I have long been interested in the field of Social Communications and have know Archbishop John Foley, the Council President for some 15 years, visiting him on each of our Ad Limina visits I have always found him both pleasant and helpful and I look forward to working more closely with him in future. As a recipient of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew's and Edinburgh's bimonthly newsletter, Archbishop Foley is also kept informed of the changes and news affecting our own archdiocese".

Cardinal O'Brien added:
"I am also pleased that I am already acquainted with Cardinal Stephen Fumio Hamao the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples. Having met him on a number of previous occasions we were both honoured by being elevated to the College of Cardinals on the same day at the Consistory held on 21 October this year.

As the Cardinal-Archbishop of the City of Edinburgh which is itself a major tourist destination, I am familiar with the pastoral challenges we face when dealing with tourists and travellers. An important area of responsibility which falls to this Council is the care of refugees and migrants. I have collaborated closely with my own Vicar Episcopal for Justice and Peace, Fr.Chris Boles S.J., and am all too aware of the difficulties faced by refugees especially those who have sought asylum in Scotland. I hope to be able to make a valuable contribution to the work of this Pontifical Council."
