15 November 2013

Following the devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan last week, the President of the Bishops Conference of Scotland, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia has written to his counterpart Archbishop Palma in Manila promising both spiritual and financial support for those affected, from Scotland s Catholic community.

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF)   has already pledged £250,000 towards the relief effort and continues to collect contributions which so far have amounted to over £200,000.

Feast of St Margaret of Scotland

His Excellency
Archbishop Jose S. Palma
Archbishop of Cebu
President of the
Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines

Your Excellency,

I write on behalf of the Catholics of Scotland to convey to you, your Bishops Conference and to the People of the Philippines   our solidarity with you at this terrible time.

Please be aware of our spiritual closeness to you as you face the many difficulties that lie ahead.   Last weekend at Masses in our churches we offered special prayers for the victims, both living and dead, of the typhoon.   We will do so again this coming weekend.   And you will continue to be in our prayers in the weeks and months ahead.

We wish to be near to you also practically and financially.   Our own overseas aid agency, SCIAF, is actively fundraising to support the relief efforts in your beloved country. SCIAF has already pledged £250,000 sterling for the aid effort and more funds will follow as they come in from our parishes and from donations.

We ask God to work through His Church and the aid agencies to bring healing in the midst of this crisis.   We pray, too, that the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the Philippines, will intercede for her children at this time.

Wishing you every support in these days, I remain

Yours sincerely in Christ,

+Philip Tartaglia,

Archbishop of Glasgow,

President of the Bishops Conference of Scotland
