"As the Coalition Authority hands back control of Iraq to its people, Cardinal, Moderator and Primus call for 'Day of Prayer' for peace on Wednesday 30 June 2004, the intended handover date.

Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Scotland, Dr Alison Elliot, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and Bishop Bruce Cameron, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, today issued a joint call for a 'Day of Prayer' for peace to be observed on Wednesday 30 June - two days after the Coalition Authority handed over power to the people of Iraq.
The church leaders said;

"As the people of Iraq are handed back control of their own country, we hope and pray that a new chapter of liberty and peace will unfold for them. We take this opportunity to appeal to all leaders Church and State throughout the world but especially here in Scotland, in the United Kingdom, and in the United States of America, to call for a day of prayer for reparation, peace and reconciliation on, Wednesday 30 June 2004."

"It would be wonderful if a great volume of prayer ascended to Almighty God from all peoples of goodwill throughout the world, from peoples of each and every faith, from peoples in churches, in mosques, in other places of worship and in their own homes and in their places of work, quite simply pausing and asking God to grant peace to this troubled world that peace which the world alone cannot give."
