Cardinal Winning is currently in Rome. he was informed last night of the sudden deterioration in the First Minister's condition and asked to be kept fully informed. On learning of the death of Mr Dewar, the Cardinal issued the following statement.

"I am shocked and saddened at the sudden death of Donald Dewar. just last week I received a letter from him, written in his usual friendly style. I has written to commend him on the introduction of free central heating for the elderly, and it was typical of him that he should write back to thank me for thanking him!

"His contribution to the life of our nation was considerable. he was the happiest of men on that lovely July day last year when the Scottish Parliament for which he had so long campaigned became a reality, and I am glad that he had at least some time to offer his experience and stabilising influence to that parliament in its earliest days.

"We did not always agree, of course. but Donald was one of those men who could disagree without being disagreeable. He was a gentleman.

"I have been praying for Donald since I heard the news last night. I was so happy that he had accepted an invitation to come to Rome next month for the 400th anniversary of the Pontifical Scots College. he will be greatly missed now. I think the epitaph he would have most appreciated was that he was a "great Scot" and that is one I am happy to offer.

"I should like to offer my sincerest personal condolences to his family and colleagues together with an assurance of prayers in this difficult time."
