Justice and Peace calls for Action from G8
Climate Change “ Nuclear Weapons “ Middle East

The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Scotland today called for action from the G8. Justice and Peace Scotland is a member of the Make Poverty History coalition and fully supported the Make Poverty History march on July 2nd. The Commission wants to point to other issues which are up for discussion at the G8 meeting and to call for action on these. Among the issues which concern the Commission are climate change, nuclear proliferation and the Middle East. Statements on these issues are being sent to G8 leaders at Gleneagles.

Justice and Peace Scotland National Secretary Richard McCready said, ˜Justice and Peace supports the Make Poverty History coalition but there are other issues which will be discussed by the G8 at Gleneagles. The Commission felt that it was important to make our voice heard on these issues as well as on the trade, aid and debt issues of Make Poverty History.

˜On climate change we are concerned about the future of all of God s creation. The eight countries which make up the G8 represent 13% of the population of the world but they create 45% of the world s emissions of climate-changing pollutants. Effective measures are needed and the G8 leaders must commit themselves to measures which limit climate change and protect the environment the integrity of creation.

˜In the 1980s the Bishops of Scotland said that it was wrong to hold nuclear weapons. Justice and Peace is looking for progress on nuclear non-proliferation. The Vatican has been at the forefront of work to stop nuclear proliferation. Justice and Peace Scotland calls upon the leaders of the G8 meeting in Scotland to redouble efforts to end the proliferation of nuclear weapons throughout the world. We also call upon the leaders of the G8 nations which hold nuclear weapons to consider disarmament.

˜On the issue of the Middle East we believe that all sides need to move towards more peaceful means of settling disputes. Justice and Peace Scotland calls on the G8 to redouble their efforts to promote a just and lasting peace in the Holy Land. We call upon the leaders of the Israeli and Palestinian people peoples to reject violence and work together for a lasting peace.

Richard McCready concluded: ˜The world will be watching the G8 and they need to deliver on a wide range of issues “ Justice and Peace Scotland will be watching and if they don t deliver we will continue putting pressure on them until they do.
