Larkhall Way Of The Cross - Palm Sunday - 5 April 2009

A unique and unprecedented ecumenical event will take place in the Lanarkshire town of Larkhall this weekend when some 300 parishioners form several of the town's churches will join together on an "Ecumenical way Of The Cross".

Church of Scotland, Congregational and Catholic parishioners will cover a one and a half mile route around the town walking behind a six foot wooden cross. Starting at 2.30p.m. The way Of The Cross we will begin at Chalmers Parish Church. There will then be stops at four of the towns churches for short prayer services. The event is expected to conclude around 4.30p.m. at St. Mary's RC Church for a concluding service, a bar-b-que and some entertainment.

Around 300 local people have committed themselves to joining the event and organisers hope that more might turn up on the day. For those who have difficulty walking, there will be two minibuses available to take them to each of the Churches. There will also be a first-aid team on hand.

Commenting on the event Fr. John Irons, Parish Priest of St. Mary's, Larkhall said;

"Larkhall has suffered for many years from very negative opinions from many people, not least the tabloid media. Sadly, this is not a true reflection of life for most people who live there. For many years now the Churches have worked together providing many ecumenical events for people to become involved with."

"In joining together in this way, we are sending out a very positive and united message to all people that sectarianism is no longer welcome anywhere and that working together is the best way forward for everyone. We hope that this may be the first of many similar events pointing to a better and brighter future."
