Re-dedication of the newly restored St. Sophia s Roman Catholic Church in

This Sunday (31 October 2004) at 4pm the local Catholic community of Galston
will gather together and celebrate the reopening of Saint Sophia s church.

Saint Sophia s, a striking red brick Byzantine-style church built by the
third Marquis of Bute and completed in 1886 was forced to close its doors in
1999 after a section of the roof collapsed.

Over the last year extensive renovation work has been carried out on the
Category A listed building with funding from Historic Scotland, the Heritage
Lottery Fund and the local community.

The Bishop of Galloway Right Reverend John Cunningham will lead the
rededication Mass on Sunday afternoon.

Commenting on the reopening, Bishop Cunningham said: This is a wonderful
occasion for the people of Galston and in particular the parishioners of
Saint Sophia s who have waited 5 years for this day to arrive. It is a
pleasure and honour to celebrate Mass in this remarkable church and I pray
that Saint Sophia s will continue to live and breathe in the heart of this
proud community.
