Scottish Children On A Mission

Cardinal Keith O Brien will launch a new initiative from MISSIO Scotland when he celebrates Mass in St Bride s primary school in Cowdenbeath on Monday 12th September at 11.00 am. MISSIO Scotland is the Scottish branch of the Pontifical Missionary Society of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Cardinal will concelebrate the mass with Fr. Pat McGuire, National Director of MISSIO Scotland.

The new initiative challenges the children to ˜Go on a Mission and each class will be issued with a backpack of resources to help them explore Ghana, this year s focus country. Pupils will use a CD-Rom to take a virtual tour of mission projects in Ghana to help them understand the needs of children in Africa.

The resources are supported and expanded on the MISSIO Website, with additional materials being added as the school session progresses.
The initiative helps schools approach Global Citizenship as well as other areas of the curriculum.
The Cardinal will encourage the pupils in their efforts and refer to his own recent experiences in mission areas.
Fr. Pat McGuire will read out a message to Scottish Schoolchildren from Fr. Patrick Byrne, Secretary General of the Pontifical Society of Missionary Children in Rome.

Fr. Byrne's message says:

"The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has entrusted me with the task of looking after Missionary Children throughout the world. We are delighted to see that Missionary Children in Scotland are taking the work a step forward and that you are being challenged to go on a mission journey."

Fr. Byrne adds;
"Pope Benedict XVI and his Bishops are delighted to have the children of Scotland as helpers in the task of preaching the loving message of the gospel."

Mrs. Hannah, Head teacher of St. Brides primary school, said;

The children of St. Brides primary have always been strong supporters of Missionary Children and are looking forward to opening these bright yellow backpacks and exploring the resources inside.
