St. Mary's, Kenmure, Bishopbriggs provides secure accommodation for young people sentenced by the Courts and the Children's Panel.

One of the young people aged 18 who had been serving a four-year sentence was found dead earlier today. He was pronounced dead at Stobhill Hospital at 12.40am this morning. His next of kin have been informed.

He was admitted to St. Mary's, Kenmure on 28th February 2002.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The police have been informed and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. It is expected that a fatal accident enquiry will be held.

The acting Principal of the unit, Neil Sharpe said this morning:

"This tragic death is a devastating blow to the staff and young people accommodated at St. Mary's. The unit management will continue to support and assist the young people in our care throughout this difficult time."

As a fatal accident enquiry is likely, no further comment will be made at this time.
