A new future for some of Scotland's most vulnerable young people that's the impact of a new £45m investment in providing secure accommodation for young offenders announced today.

The cash injection will allow the two schools to provide secure accommodation, and also offer upgraded facilities at other sites across the country.

Today the Boards of Managers of Saint Philip's School, Airdrie and the Good Shepherd Centre, Bishopton joined Cora Foundation in welcoming the announcement by the Scottish Executive.

Monsignor Peter Smith, Chairman of Cora Foundation which helps co-ordinate the work of Good Shepherd and St Philip's said:

"The Boards of Managers and the Cora Board are well aware of the need for good-quality secure accommodation and the timely announcement today makes clear the Executive's commitment to provide for that need.

"The funding commitment made towards the costs of these units is very necessary and it assures all involved of the Executive's commitment to this important work with young people.

"In playing their part in tackling youth crime, the Schools in the Cora system provide a caring and professional response to criminal behavior striving to educate our young people and form them so that they can in time take their place as responsible members of society. The Executive's recognition of the values fostered by Saint Philip's and the Good Shepherd Centre is a welcome recognition of the efforts of dedicated staff under the leadership of Principals whose commitment to their young people is second to none.

"The addition of close support places at these schools gives a breadth to the services that can be provided and to the responses that can be made to the specific needs of individual young people.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the Executive for the betterment of our communities."
