Speaking in the wake of the grenade attack on Sunday on a church in Islamabad, Archbishop Keith O'Brien, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, said: "We deplore this barbaric act, which is both a brutal assault on human life and an attack on religious freedom. Sunday's attack on the Protestant International Church in Islamabad was targeted against innocent individuals from many countries, joined together in peaceful prayer."
The congregation, included people from ; Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, the United States of America, Sri Lanka and Scotland.
Archbishop O'Brien concluded; "Just as we condemned the attack on the Mosque in Leith last year, and called for inter-faith tolerance, so too do we condemn this attack and ask once again that believers of all faiths show respect for one another.
We will remember in our prayers, the five people who died and their families while we pray for a rapid end to such violence."
