"We, the Catholic Bishops of Scotland share the concern of all people anxious to avoid war and conflict.

We ask for prayers for those who bear the heavy responsibility of governing democratically and support attempts to build a widespread consensus in the face of any threats to world peace.

We welcome the recent undertakings given by the Prime Minister, specifically; to deal with Saddam Hussein using the mechanisms of the United Nations and to avoid precipitate military action.

Mindful of Catholic teaching that sees war only as a last resort when no other options remain, we recall the words of Pope John Paul II in 1982 when he reminded us that the scale and horror of modern warfare made it an unacceptable means of settling differences between nations."
