"My heart goes out to all those who fear for their own and their families' future at this time of great uncertainty. It is my hope and prayer that a just settlement can be achieved at a European level in the near future - a settlement which will guarantee a viable future for the fishing communities all round Scotland who rely on the sea for their living.  

As a church we are well aware of the needs of seafarers and their families and have a long established 'Apostleship of the sea' agency based in Glasgow. This organisation exists to provide pastoral and practical support to fishermen, seafarers and their dependants. It is funded through an annual 'Sea Sunday' collection taken up in parishes.  

The Catholic church in Scotland also provide a network of chaplains serving ports and seafaring communities around the country.  

I am sure their thoughts and prayers will be with those men and their families whose future is threatened at this time."
