"In a historic address to the Scottish Parliament, Sr. Roseann Reddy, of
Cardinal Winning's Pro-Life Initiative will today use a prayer of Pope John
Paul II directed to Mary the Mother of God in her ""Time for Reflection""
delivered at 2.30pm on Wednesday 13 November 2002.

This is believed to be the first time in the reconvened parliament that a
Pope's prayer, particularly one addressed to Mary, has been read aloud.

In that prayer found at the end of the encyclical on the Gospel of Life,
Pope John Paul entrusted the cause of life to Mary, the ""Bright dawn of the
new world, Mother of the living"". He asked the Mother of God to grant that
""all who believe in her Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty
and love to the people of our time.""

Sr Roseann pointed out that this month Scotland
celebrates the feasts of St Andrew, patron of Scotland and Margaret, Queen
of Scots.

Sr. Roseann ended her reflection by saying:
""As we strive to serve people, we must be like these great patrons. We
should be recognized for our tolerance and respect, our kindness and

She then quoted the Pope's prayer at the end of his encyclical letter, the
Gospel of Life:

""O Mary, Bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living,
To you do we entrust the cause of life:
Look down, O Mother,
Upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born,
Of the poor whose lives are made difficult,
Of men and women who are victims of brutal violence,
Of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided
Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with
honesty and
Love to the people of our time.
Obtain for them the grace to accept the Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy
of celebrating
it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to
it resolutely, in
order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of
truth and love, to
the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life.""

Sr Roseann co-ordinates The Pro-Life Initiative which was launched by the
late Thomas Joseph Cardinal Winning on Mothers Day, 9th March 1997, in order
to help provide a caring, Christian response to anyone faced with a crisis
pregnancy, from whatever background or faith.

A spokes person for Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell said recently
how much the First Minister liked the time for reflection at the Scottish
Parliament. No less then 34 speakers including a Buddhist, a Sikh, a member
of the Church of Scotland and a humanist were invited to address MSPs.

Commenting on the reflection, Director of the Catholic Media Office, Peter
Kearney said: ""While the Scottish Parliament's 'Time for Reflection' has
been accused in the past of consisting mainly of ""uninspiring platitudes""
Sr. Roseann's powerful reflection shows what deeply held beliefs,
passionately expressed really sound like. Her words and those of the Pope
whom she quotes are a challenge to Scotland's politicians, to reassess their
priorities and to focus on upholding the dignity and sanctity of human life
in all that they do.""
