PRESS RELEASE: CARDINAL WINNING'S ANNIVERSARY

Tuesday June 17 sees the second anniversary of the death of Cardinal Thomas Winning, Archbishop of Glasgow from 1974 until 2001.

Commenting on the anniversary, his successor, Archbishop Mario Conti, said:

"Cardinal Tom's legacy is immense. He put the Catholic Church on the map of Scottish public life. I knew him for almost 50 years, and admired his courage, determination and loyalty to the Church and to his colleagues and people. Thousands of
Glaswegians saw in him those same qualities. As I said on the day of my appointment I feel deeply honoured to success him as
Archbishop of Glasgow".

To mark the Cardinal's anniversary it is expected that more than 100 Masses will be celebrated on June 17 throughout the Archdiocese of Glasgow and beyond. Archbishop Conti will preside at the 1 p.m. Mass in St Andrew's Cathedral, above the crypt in which the Cardinal lies buried.

In recent months the Cardinal has been commemorated in various ways. The Cardinal Winning Reading Room has been opened at Turnbull Hall in Glasgow University. His former school, Our Lady's high in Motherwell has dedicated a new Cardinal Winning room to his memory.

An exhibition of the late Cardinal's vestments, donated by his family, is on display at St Aidan's High in Wishaw.

In addition, the Archdiocese is in discussion with the City Council with a view to commemorating the Cardinal in a permanent way and the idea will be one of several to be discussed when the Archbishop meets the city's new Lord Provost in the near
future.

* YOU ARE INVITED TO SEND A REPORTER/PHOTOGRAPHER/CAMERA CREW TO THE MASS AT ST ANDREW'S CATHEDRAL, CLYDE STREET, GLASGOW
AT 1 P.M. ON TUESDAY JUNE 17.
