Following the death of Archbishop Denis Hurley, emeritus Bishop of Durban,Cardinal O'Brien, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland released the following tribute:
"Archbishop Denis Hurley was an outstanding church leader whose leadership inspired not only the people of South Africa but those in other parts of the world too.

As Bishop of Durban for 45 years he campaigned for human rights and called for an end to the shameful system of apartheid - a call which found a supportive audience here in Scotland.

I send my condolences as President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland to the Diocese of Durban and to the entire Catholic community in Southern Africa at this time of loss, together with the promise of my prayers for the repose of Archbishop Hurley's soul."
