Scotland's only National Catholic Seminary, Scotus College in Glasgow is to have a new Rector. The Bishops' Conference of Scotland agreed this week to appoint Fr. Willie McFadden to the post, he will take up the position on June 6, 2004.

Announcing the appointment, the President of the Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Keith O'Brien said:

"Fr. Willie McFadden is a highly capable and experienced priest who has gained invaluable experience as Vice-Rector of Scotus in recent years. I know he is held in high esteem by the staff and students at the college, and by the Bishops also."

The Cardinal added;
"I welcome him to his new post and thank him for his willingness to continue serving the Catholic Church in Scotland in the key area of training and preparation for priesthood. At the same time I extend my own thanks and those of my brother Bishops to the outgoing rector Fr. Neil Donnachie for his commitment and effort throughout his term as rector."

The new rector Fr. Willie McFadden said:
"I am very pleased to be appointed as rector, having worked as an extra-mural member of staff since 1993 and as vice-rector since 2001. I acknowledge the good work done by the present rector, Fr. Donnachie over the last five years and would hope to build on this solid foundation which he leaves."

He added;
"The aim of Scotus College is to help students discern the call to priesthood, I look forward to continued involvement with staff and students in this work. Scotus has an important role to play in the Catholic church in Scotland and is a valuable resource for the wider Church community. I appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Bishops of Scotland and recognise the responsibility involved in the important task of the formation of future priests for our country."
