Cardinal Keith O'Brien comments on Registrar general's Review of Demographic Trends and statistics showing marriage rates at a ten year high.

"The rise in the number of marriages taking place in Scotland is very welcome. It is reassuring to see that couples increasingly consider marriage as the most stable basis for a long term relationship and see it as providing the most secure environment for bringing up children"

Cardinal O'Brien, who is Archbishop of the Archdiocese of St Andrew's & Edinburgh and President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland added;

"Marriage has traditionally been regarded as the building block of every
society “ may it long continue to be the foundation on which Scottish
society rests.
