Acknowledging receipt of a letter today (14 September 2004) from Mr Philip Rycroft, Head of Schools Group at the Scottish Executive s Education Department, Bishop Joseph Devine, Bishop of Motherwell and President of the Catholic Education Commission said;

Mr Rycroft s letter of 14 September, states that Scottish Ministers do not believe that there are grounds in law for them to intervene in the dispute between North Lanarkshire Council and the Diocese of Motherwell regarding proposals for shared campus schools.

The points raised in this letter will be examined in detail by the Diocese of Motherwell and the Catholic Education Service with a view to seeking detailed legal advice on the options available to the Catholic Church.

In the meantime no further comment will be made on the subject.
