Christmas Message 2004 from Bishop Peter A Moran

The angels gave us the message of peace on earth.
The carol tells us that Christmas brings tidings of comfort and joy.
Yet, on a world scale, peace still eludes us, and at the personal level, far too many people have little comfort and little joy.

We, as Christians, may be embarrassed that our Saviour s birthday causes anxiety, exhaustion and cynicism.
How does our joy go wrong?
Why are we less Christian at Christmas?
Perhaps we are not at peace with ourselves and with God s plans for us.

When we recognise not just our weaknesses but also our strengths, which are God s gifts, we can begin to do his work and build his world.
His plans begin to come true in us.
When we recognise his gifts and his image in other people,
we begin to build his peace, person to person.
Our little groups of two or three become his kingdom in miniature,
because he is there among us.
When others begin to trust us, and know we value them because God values them we begin to build joy for them, and they find comfort in that.
For them, the good news becomes real.

And then, ever so gradually, from these tiny beginnings, peace spreads and takes hold, just as the message of the Saviour s birth
grew to become the good news of a world reborn, to the glory of God.
We have the resources: we may have health, or money, and freedom to use them: we have the opportunities every day, in small things or in great,
to break down tensions, to relieve sorrow, to build peace and bring joy.
What better way to celebrate his birthday?

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to you, and to all men and women of good will, this Christmas.
