In a message sent to the High Commissioner for Pakistan in London, Dr. Maleeha Lodhi and Mr Shah M'Jamal the Vice Consul for Pakistan in Glasgow, Cardinal Keith O'Brien has offered condolences and the promise of prayers to the people of Pakistan.

The text of the message is shown below:

"The earthquake which has struck your country has brought with it devastation and loss of life on an unimaginable scale. Like many others, I have watched with increasing horror as the death toll in Pakistan has grown, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of your fellow citizens. I send you now the promise of my prayers and the prayers of Scotland's Catholic community as you come to terms with your loss and begin to rebuild
Your shattered communities."
