Bishop Philip Tartaglia gave the inaugural talk at a new Pro Life Group in the Diocese of Paisley last night (Sunday 7 May).

Almost one hundred people filled the Cathedral Hall at St.Mirins in Paisley, to hear the Bishop endorse the new group and give it his blessing.

In his address Archbishop Tartaglia criticised the idea that "force is the basis of rights" arguing that legal abortion means that a state accepts; "that the rights of the weak can be violated, in short, that the right of force prevails over the force of rights"

The group aims to organise monthly meetings which will alternate between talks by outside speakers and prayer and reflection meetings whose purpose is to answer the call from Pope John Paul II in Evangelium Vitae "to foster in ourselves and others a contemplative outlook and to see life in its deeper meaning".

The groups organisers are Fr Eoin Patten, assistant priest at St.Mirins Cathedral and Mrs Angela Deighan a cathedral parish parishioner.

Commenting on the turnout, Mrs Deighan said;

"I was delighted and overwhelmed at the number of people who turned out to endorse this new venture. The group will write to all who attended inviting them to future talks and evenings of prayer and reflection. Anyone interested in coming along would be more than welcome."

Mrs Deighan added

"While we hope to bring many informed and interesting speakers to Paisley we also need to encourage Catholics in the diocese to pray for a 'culture of life' in Scotland - in the same way Archbishop Tartaglia has asked us to pray for vocations."
