Scottish Church is one of UK's best modern places of worship

St Bride's RC Church in East   Kilbride has been voted one of the UK's best modern places of worship. The new - town landmark has been named in the top three of the Best Modern Churches architecture competition run by the National Churches Trust, the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association and the 20th Century Society.

St Brides was picked out from over 200 entries UK-wide and is the only church in Scotland to make the top three places of worship judged to be the best sacred spaces built in the last 60 years. The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby presented the awards at a   ceremony held at Lambeth Palace. The top place was awarded to ST Paul's Church, Bow Common London and silver to St Mary's RC Church, Lancashire with St Bride's taking the National Churches Trust Bronze award.

St Bride's Church was built in 1964 and was designed by Gillespie Kidd and Coia   architects. Its distinctive red brick modernist style makes it one of East Kilbride's best known buildings.

The judges said of St Bride's:   A tour de force of powerful form,   a seemingly unforgiving massif (sic) of brick revealing carefully considered but sparely created details that relate very well to the function of building as a post-Vatican 2 church.   There is nothing here out of place.
